The Magic Mondays- Pre-releasing and Deckbuilding
with Chaz Volpe
Hey all! It’s that time for my Magic Mondays! I know it has been a week but sometimes I may have to forego Magic Mondays in lieu of making the Podcast (if you haven’t listened to the latest one go tune in!). That being said, the M15 pre-release weekend is in the books and there has been buzz abound the social-media networks that BSB is a part of. This week I wanted to share with you some pre-release stories, impressions, and deckbuilding for new Standard. A lot of talking sharing and discussing has been going on and I urge all of you to become a part of the community, we’re growing and seemingly gaining popularity.
I also wanted to re-iterate again, thank you all for the continued support and following along with us. We are now over 2,000 views on the blog and we are so very appreciative to you all! Without you readers and followers it wouldn't create a drive to do what we do. Again, thank you so much.
So let’s get to it yeah?
I first want to share some social media stuff with you all showcasing some pre-release stories, we would also love to hear yours! I always enjoy including the community into my articles.

Good stuff from twitter, thanks followers! Hope to continue to have more and show-case off some more tweets, it’s really fun this Twitter stuff. follow @boltsnapbolt
Now, some Facebook posts, thanks BSB people!
From our own Pete Casella, via The Chicago Clubhouse pre-release weekend.
And some more stories!
Well, that’s always good stuff. So good to always check in on everyone, hope everyone’s pre-release went great!
Well, I also did promise some deckbuilding for the new Standard before we say adeu to RTR block and welcome Khans in October. It’s may very well be a whacky summer standard, but as I mentioned in the Podcast, it should look like a harmonious one come October. I really hope I’m right! Well, let’s get into some deck-lists shall we?
From our own Andrew Wise:
3 elvish mystic
3 sylvan caryatid
2 voyaging satyr
4 Nyx weaver
2 reaper of the wilds
3 indulgent tormentor
3 champion of stray souls
2 ob nixilis unshackled
3 abhorrent overlord
1 hornet queen
3 gray merchant
|
2 dictate of erebos
2 commune with the gods
3 whip of erebos
Lands??

Okay, so we have this weird GB Rock/GY based deck. Thoughts? I don’t think we have to make this based on the GY decks we have seen recently in Standard, because then it wouldn’t be unique! I think that’s what Andrew is trying for, something different. For one I think we could somehow make use of some more 4 of’s to make this deck do what Andrew envisions. I think the following could be changed:
+1 Elvish Mystic
+2 Voyaging Satyr
+1 Sylvan Caryatid
+2 Commune with the Gods
+2 Voyaging Satyr
+1 Sylvan Caryatid
+2 Commune with the Gods
-Hornet Queen
-2 Ob Nixilis
-3 Champion of Stray Souls
-2 Ob Nixilis
-3 Champion of Stray Souls
I think by changing those numbers around we can let the curve breathe a little bit and be a bit more focused with the numbers. Also, getting rid of Hornet Queen reinforces the black devotion theme Andrew is going with. I also dont think Champion of Stray Souls ios worth the mana investment, so we also took that out and have more impactful drops.
I’d be interested to see what you all think we can change for Andrew here, post your comments!

I think Dakota is on to something here, and I’m intrigued enough to perhaps use this on a Twitch session of testing. Oh, yeah forgot to mention that, I think I shall try to get a set time and schedule for Twitch testing sessions, i’ll keep you all updated. I had a fairly good turnout on Friday when I had a small session. Thanks for everyone who was viewing! Though, I digress.
Dakota has some really interesting Chord implementation here, I think with some testing we can see the validity of Chord in a deck like this. It certainly changes the line of play leaving yourself untapped more on the opponents turn is scary for a deck packing so many 1-of-creature tool box like this. I think this could go places, what about all of you? Leave your comments!
Well, there’s a little bit of everything for this week. I've been thinking of having a page and series of articles dedicated to the deck Primers and discussion we do on the FB group and any other outlet we decide to use. I will be sure to update you all of decks we all have been brewing and the progression of said decks in their own updates. Let me know if that’s something you all would like to see. You can look out for something like “Primers and Lists” section with the label Primers so they’re all consolidated in one spot.
Hope you all enjoyed this week’s Magic Mondays, here’s to another great week for the MTG community, and here at the BSB blog/group. Thanks again everyone for your Tweets/FB posts and to you all for your continued support!
Oh, and yeah seriously, join the group! or comment! or both!
