My Welcoming Statement!
by Paul ‘Frodo’ Muller
Hey all, I’m happy to be coming to you from Bolt Snap Bolt. This will serve as my first article, as well as an introduction to who I am and my perspective on the game as a whole, with regular content to follow as a Thursday slot. In brief, I’m Paul Muller; I’ve been playing tournaments, and magic in general, since Return to Ravnica, though my first three experiences playing were the prereleases of Inistrad block. I play standard and legacy mostly, with one notable finish being 12th at the last Baltimore SCG piloting Jund monsters.
With this article, however, I would really like to take a quick look at magic in general and what it means to each of us, the players invested enough to seek out and read content on it. I would like you to take a moment and think about all this game has given you; the great friends, the camaraderie, the bad beats stories. For most of us the game is a hobby, a reason to leave the house, something to do with friends after work. For a few of us it is a career path, and for most of us it is a way to do something we love, and hate at times, with the best people. Magic, above all else, is a community. We take in the misfits, we take in everyone regardless of nationality and race, income, etc.; these things all fall away and we become just people, magic players. We have a common interest that transcends the community, allows the timid to be bold, the socially awkward to be brave.
Any magic player can walk into a room packed with people and have a common interest with a thousand others, who all at a moment’s notice can walk up, strike up a conversation, and end up your new best friend just because you play magic. I don’t know if any of you have ever stopped and noticed just how amazing this truly is. To give you an example, at the modern GP in Worchester, after my round 3 opponent handed me my first loss of the day, he gave me homemade jerky. IT WAS AWESOME. I was mad that I lost, but you just can’t be mad at someone who has finished mindslaver locking you, and then hands you delicious food. Its moments like these that make you stop and think about what a wonderful community this is.That’s all for this week! I hope, if anything, I have reminded you of what an amazing community you have chosen to be a part of. Now that we have reminisced on our fond magic memories, stick around for next week’s article where I will be previewing the invitational. Hopefully I can last second queue, but even if I don’t I will be showing off some sweet standard and legacy lists. See you next week!
