The Magic Mondays- More community playtesting/Reactions
with Chaz Volpe
Hey again everyone! Time for another Magic Mondays. Where mostly I just ramble on a multitude of various MTG related content! This week I have another round of BSB community decklist testing, some positive, some not so positive. Adriel knows, he sure knows….lol! There was also an article released today on the MTG mothership site about some really big changes coming to the game we all know and love. What does this all mean? Well, let’s get to it shall we?
So, there we have it, some highlights from my recent stream with my “co-streamer” BSB member, Adriel.
We also are starting up on Youtube! BoltSnapBolt.
Full videos here:
Modern “Chief Engineer”
-Not enough synergy. Without Chief Engineer the deck can’t run. Even with Chief Engineer you’re not guaranteed to “go off” and drop a large threat.
-Not enough staying power, the deck gasses out way too quickly. Without legitimate threats (Myr Superion performed poorly) there just isn’t a good stream of threats.
-The whole deck just needs to go back to the drawing board. Adriel has a very unique idea, just needs to re-focus what the deck wants to be doing.
That wrapped up our Modern section of play-testing. I’m always an advocate of “rogue” decks and testing out new strategies, so it all was fun in the end. It’s an entirely different story of making those decks into serious contenders. The deck needs to be re-invented at this stage, and that’s okay. That’s what testing is for. We will for sure being doing lots of testing with various decks, from community brewed decks, to well known “meta” decks.
As for Standard, I wanted to base a deck around these cards:
Preliminary testing:
-Only got a few games with this list, but it was running fairly smoothly. I wanted to keep as much RTR cards out of the list for some “future” testing. So, that was the premise. Take games with grains of salt before you guys jump down my throat about not having Khans cards. I fully understand it will be a different animal, I’m mainly testing self-synergy here.
-Master of Waves is a really good finisher.
-Aetherspouts will be a card many blue mages lean on. I’m 98.9% certain on this one.
-While losing Jace AOT will certainly hurt, I think Jace TLG will replace him fairly nicely. Having UU casting cost certainly helps. Jace/Kiora/Ashiok play very nicely together. Forming a solid defensive core to your deck while having “ultimate” threat on the board.
-Ultimately BUG/RUG will have their own wedge in Khans, which one will end up better is up in the air. Both will certainly have their strengths as well as weaknesses. As much as I enjoy these colors and playing with these cards. I may end up leaning to RUG for exactly one reason.
Anger of the Gods.
Another big thing happened in the MTG world:
I just want to make sure everyone reads that. I want to tackle this in our upcoming Podcast and will hold off talking about it in the article, but fully up to discussing it in the comments below. I think there’s much to be said and fully want to hear everyones reactions to this. So comment away and we can have that dialogue.
That’s it for Magic Mondays this week, see you all next time! Be sure to tune into our Podcasts, i’ll have our previous one posted up ASAP and have the upcoming one posted in a bit more timely manner. Stay tuned to another great slew of content here at BSB!
Thanks for everyone’s continued support.
Chaz
