The Magic Mondays: Triumphant Return! Welcome back.
Hello everyone, as I have said I have been negligent with Magic Mondays for a while. With other things needing my attention around the BSB Group, it has affected my weekly article. Just so everyone knows I also do the BSB Podcast and now Pete and myself are setting up something similar to the SSG series “VS” between Chris Van Meter and BBD. We will be streaming the community deck-lists, yes YOURS, up against “meta” decks or other community deck-lists. We are hoping this will provide invaluable information to the group and everyone who follows us on the blog/twitch/Twitter.
That being said: Let’s dive on in for the returning week of Magic Mondays.
Here is the first go at our play-testing and hopefully we will polish this more as we go along.
Now; a few things to say.
1.) These decks are obviously going to be rotating in October.
2.) While these may be a small sample size with specific deck-lists there are a good amount of Community lists and we want to give them all a fair chance.
Few notes about these Community lists:
Naya Slivers: by Matthew Hungerford
1.) There wasn't anything glaring about the deck-list that was wrong. As you can see from the video I was flooded both games.
2.) The Slivers deck can very easily gas out. Though with the addition of Ajani/Chord/Domri I think Matthew covered an issue a very all-out aggro decks have.
3.) Your creatures are usually superior in combat.
4.) Your mana base really hurts.
B/W Humans - by Samuel Wells
1.) Spirit Bonds was a very nice card to have. I think it’s a very powerful effect.
2.) The deck is very resilient.
3.) Plays must be very tight. While it is an aggressive deck, it’s very grindy.
4.) Spirit Bonds.
I’ll end this week with a few MTGFinance tips for you guys if you haven’t seen them on my Twitter or BSB Group. We have talked a good deal about what we see going forward in October and last BSB Podcast Pete and myself gave some cheap picks to “stock” up on (i’ll be using the Stockpile reference here again).
I’ll let the photos speak for themselves.
So, let me explain some picks other than the ones I have mentioned on the Podcast.
1.) Soldier of the Pantheon/Firedrinker Satyr: I’m going to rope these both into the same category. Mainly because they will most likely be 4X staples in their respective aggressive color strategies. Soldier especially considering the Multicolor block coming in Khans of Tarkir. Potentially has huge upside in both of these given how cheap these can be purchased. You can look back on a trend of Stromkirk Noble and Legion Loyalist when looking at Firedrinker.
I bought these at: less or = 1$
Aiming to get rid of these at: 3-4$
*These will end up being quick flips, don’t wait on these. Flip fast and flip into the hype.*
2.) Anger of the Gods: With WOTC announcing that they will be getting rid of unconditional 4CMC wrath effects I’m 99.9% sure players will lean on a very potent sweeper in Anger of the Gods. This is really efficient, sees play in Modern, and can be bought on the cheap right at this moment. Also with RUG and UWR being very popular wedge colors that increases this value pick even further.
I bought these at: 1.50
Looking to sell these at: 4-5$
I think those are realistic goals to sell those cards, if you disagree feel free to do so and we can have a conversation about it. I’m always open to dialogue and unlike many other MTGFinance writers I’m 100% open to being wrong and willing to take a loss on specs. Though a lot of experience in this game and monitoring trends brings me to the picks I make. I try not to be haphazard with anyone’s money including my own.
That concludes Magic Mondays for this week. I’m very appreciative again to everyone out there who follows us and this column and sorry for being negligent. So hopefully everyone got a few ideas of where to be for October Standard season. It’s going to be a fun one for sure. I’ll leave a few images here of a few new spoilers we have got from the set. These will be talked about on our upcoming Podcast.
