Visions from Beyond - "BW Kill-Stuff"
Greetings readers! This is Samuel Wells with another Vision From Beyond. I am continuing my series of decks that I predict making it in the coming standard. Today I will not be going quite as deep as my last article. Instead of going with one of the highly synergistic decks, I am going to try and discuss a deck that will immediately be good and fits with the fundamentals of a new format to me.
Every new format there are a couple decks that I immediately look to because they are so simple to build and have a really sound base to deck construction. The first is the red aggro, because it takes advantage of the slower decks. The second is a black based removal deck. I really like when a deck just gets to play one-for-one until you get to turn the corner with one of your bombs. It is a very easy deck to build and play entering a new format. And is infinitely tweak-able to fit the meta you are playing in. Before archetypes are really formed that can create really powerful synergies, decks like this one are really viable. I want to show off a very basic shell to a deck that you can throw together that will take advantage of the inefficient new decks that people will be running.
Here’s the list;
------------------------------
BW Kill Control:
Win Cons (6):
3 Elspeth, Sun’s Champion
2 Empty the Pits
1 Liliana Vess
Draw (6):
4 Sign in Blood
2 Read the Bones
Removal (24):
4 Thoughtseize
4 Hero’s Downfall
4 Bile Blight
4 Banishing Light
4 Murderous Cut
2 Utter End
2 End Hostilities
Land (24):
4 Temple of Silence
4 Caves of Koilos
3 Scoured Barrens
2 Plains
2 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
9 Swamp
-------------------------------
The brilliance of this deck is the fact that it will always have the response. I crafted the deck so that it will never be soft to what the opponent is trying to do. I am also able to shape the deck to the fairing better against the aggro decks with cards will drown in sorrow out of the board and better against the control decks with the 4 despise to capture planeswalker and Liliana as a very viable win condition by herself in the grind match ups. Finally, the match that I am most excited to see are the green midrange decks and walker decks. My deck gets so much tempo from being able to use my removal spells on cards like Polukranos and Sarkhan. As I've stated before, these are some of the decks I am most concerned about seeing in the coming weeks so having a deck that is designed to dismantle these decks is a great feeling. This deck will never win be winning awards for its creativity or for its looks, but the deck has the consistency to be a real house until the format smooths out.
Normally I would go over the specific card choices for the deck and explain the synergies that may not be evident. But this deck really doesn't have those sorts of includes and I don’t think there is anything in the deck that really needs to be explained. At least in terms of the role it plays.
I guess that brings me to the end of this quick and dirty Vision From Beyond. This is Samuel Wells, thanking you for reading.
